A 96 year old woman has died after she was trapped inside her burning house in Ayoo B Village, Siaya County.

Police are investigating the incident as suspected arson.

The victim, identified as Josphine Atieno Odongo, perished after the house caught fire at around 5pm on Tuesday.

According to police, officers responded to a distress call from a resident and arrived at the scene to find the elderly woman’s body burnt beyond recognition.

Neighbours alleged that her grandson, Fredrick Owino Juma aged 33 had deliberately set the house ablaze before fleeing.

Police said the prolonged dry spell caused the fire to spread rapidly, frustrating efforts by residents to rescue the elderly woman.

The blaze also destroyed property of unknown value.

The motive behind the incident has not yet been established.

Investigators noted that the suspect lived in the same homestead with his biological mother and the deceased.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident by Police officers and taken to Siaya Police Station, where he remains in custody pending further investigations.

The victim’s body was moved to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
