A small scale gold trader from Bondo,Siaya county was lured into a robbery trap in Siaya Township before being attacked and robbed by a gang of six men, as police swiftly arrested three suspects and recovered some of the stolen property.
According to police, Samuel Ndege received a phone call from an unknown person claiming to have 0.2 grammes of gold for sale on Thursday.
He travelled to Siaya Township, where he met three men who convinced him to accompany them to Mulaha on the outskirts of the town to inspect the gold.
While riding on one of the suspects’ motorcycles, they were joined by three more men.
The group then escorted Ndege into a thicket in Mulaha, where they robbed him of Sh12,000 in cash, a Samsung A12 smartphone, a KAGTEL mobile phone, a pair of earpods and a mini weighing machine.
The attackers, armed with a panga, two knives and a pair of pliers tortured the victim by pulling his right thumb with the pliers to force him to reveal the password to his Samsung phone, causing him physical injuries.
After escaping, the victim reported the incident at Siaya Police Station.
Officers launched an operation based on intelligence and arrested the main suspect, Kennedy Odour Odour, alias “Orya”, who was found in possession of the stolen Samsung A12 after allegedly wiping its data.
The suspect later led detectives to the hideout of his alleged accomplices, leading to the arrest of James Juma, alias “Ras”, and Ian Otieno Odhiambo.
Police recovered a panga from James Juma, a Boxer motorcycle registration KMEY 385K believed to have been used during the robbery, and four suspected stolen smartphones.
The three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue, while detectives have launched a manhunt for the remaining three suspects who are still at large.
Police said the recovered exhibits will be used as evidence as the case proceeds.
