Former Labour Cabinet Secretary and ex-Kaloleni Member of Parliament Samuel Kazungu Kambi has once again found himself at the centre of political speculation following his Friday meeting with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi.
According to political analysts in Kilifi county the timing of the meeting has fuelled debate over the future of Kenya Kwanza politics in the Coast region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting came at a time when the ruling coalition is seeking to strengthen its grip on Kilifi County after the political fallout involving former Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa, who lost influence within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and has from Thursday been seen gravitating towards the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
A cross section of political observers who talked to your favourite online news platform DNK-International view Kambi’s renewed engagement with President Ruto as a possible indication that he could be entrusted with rebuilding Kenya Kwanza’s political machinery in Kilifi, where the opposition has traditionally enjoyed considerable support.
While neither State House nor Kambi publicly disclosed the details of their discussions, the meeting has been interpreted as a signal that the veteran politician remains an important figure in Coast politics.
Born in Kilifi County, Kambi’s rise from humble beginnings has often been cited as one of the most inspiring political journeys in the region.
During his parliamentary vetting in 2019, he narrated how poverty forced him to drop out of school while in Standard Three before returning years later to complete his education.
He eventually obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Studies and later earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.
He also indicated that he had embarked on doctoral studies in finance and management.
Before venturing into politics, Kambi worked as a manager at the former Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation between 1987 and 1992.
Later on he joined private business.
His interaction with grassroots communities and development issues gradually attracted him to elective politics, where he built his support base in Kaloleni Constituency.
Kambi entered Parliament after winning the Kaloleni parliamentary seat in the 2007 General Election on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket.
During the Grand Coalition Government, he was appointed Assistant Minister for Medical Services, marking his first appointment to the government.
Despite losing his bid for Kilifi Governor, then President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated him as Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection.
At the ministry, he oversaw labour relations, employment policies, industrial harmony and social protection programmes targeting vulnerable Kenyans.
His appointment made him one of the few Coast leaders in the Jubilee Cabinet.
His political fortunes, however, suffered setbacks after the 2013 elections.
He failed to secure the Kilifi governorship and consequently exited elective politics.
In 2019, President Kenyatta nominated him to serve as a Commissioner at the National Land Commission, a position that returned him to public service after several years outside government.
Throughout his career, Kambi has faced numerous political challenges, including electoral defeats, criticism over his communication style and intense competition within Coast politics.
His parliamentary vetting sessions occasionally attracted national attention due to his humorous responses and candid personality, qualities that endeared him to supporters while attracting criticism from opponents.
Despite the setbacks, he has remained active in national politics and continued to support President William Ruto’s political agenda although at some point he was seen with politicians supporting opposition side that comprises among others DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua.
Kambi is remembered for several colourful remarks that frequently made headlines.
Among his most quoted statements was his declaration during his Cabinet vetting that if found guilty of corruption, he deserved not only prosecution but to be “shot,” a comment he later clarified was intended to demonstrate his opposition to graft.
His frequent laughter during parliamentary appearances also became one of his political trademarks.
His latest meeting with President Ruto has reignited speculation that he could play a significant role in shaping Kenya Kwanza’s strategy in Kilifi as the coalition seeks experienced political figures capable of countering shifting alliances at the Coast.
With Aisha Jumwa charting a different political path, Kambi’s experience in Parliament, Cabinet and national politics could once again place him at the heart of Kilifi’s political realignments as the country inches closer to the 2027 General Election.
