A 19 year old TVET student has been arrested over alleged threats to burn down the administration block and other facilities at Pwani University in Kilifi County.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Harrison Onyango, was apprehended following reports indicating that a section of TVET students was planning to torch university property in protest over a newly introduced examination materials fee.
The unrest is said to have been triggered after the TVET Director, Professor Mwafaida, announced that every TVET student would be required to pay Sh4,000 to cater for examination materials.
Police said officers from Kilifi North led by OCPD Stanley Tonui and the DCIO worked jointly with the university’s security department to investigate the alleged threats.
The operation led to the arrest of Onyango, who is said to have masterminded the planned arson.
The suspect is being held at Kilifi Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, August 3 to face a charge of preparation to commit a felony.
