A man suspected of impersonating a police officer has been arrested in Nairobi after officers recovered a pistol, handcuffs and documents allegedly identifying him as a police constable.
The suspect, identified as Philomon Kiplangat Chepkwony, was arrested at about 2.30 a.m. on Sunday by officers from Kilimani Police Station responding to a distress call at L’Arc Casino within Yaya Centre.
Police said the suspect was found inside a black motor vehicle.
A search led to the recovery of a pistol, an empty magazine, a pair of handcuffs, a purported Certificate of Appointment bearing his identification details and claiming he was a police constable, as well as a purported firearm licence.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect reportedly told investigators that about 100 rounds of ammunition were being kept at his residence.
Police have launched efforts to trace and recover the ammunition while verifying the authenticity of the recovered firearm and documents.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
The firearm, handcuffs, documentary exhibits and the vehicle have been detained as exhibits pending forensic examination and verification.
