Former Murang’a Governor Francis Mwangi wa Iria is one of the most recognisable political figures from the Mt Kenya region, admired by supporters for his development agenda while facing sustained legal and financial challenges that have clouded his post-governorship career.
The latest setback came after a public auction notice was issued for his prime residential property in Nairobi’s affluent Karen estate over an alleged unpaid bank loan.
The nearly completed luxury home, registered jointly with companies associated with him, including Edinburgh College Limited and Edinburgh Mountain Hospital Limited, has been advertised for sale together with a hospital in Murang’a County after a creditor sought to recover the outstanding debt.
The auction notice is separate from the corruption cases he continues to face in court.
Born in 1968, the 58 year old politician hails from Murang’a County.
He attended local primary and secondary schools before pursuing higher education in business related studies.
The former Governor holds qualifications in Business Administration and Management.
He also undertook executive leadership programmes that prepared him for senior corporate management.
Before joining elective politics, Wa Iria built an impressive corporate career.
He held senior management positions at Kenya Breweries, Freshco Seeds, Ngano Feeds and Industrial Promotion Services before becoming the Managing Director of New Kenya Co-operative Creameries (New KCC).
His turnaround of the struggling dairy processor earned him national recognition as a capable manager and elevated his profile among farmers, especially in Central Kenya.
His popularity among coffee and dairy farmers inspired his entry into politics during the 2013 General Election, when he successfully contested the Murang’a governorship on a TNA party ticket.
Riding on the wave created by the devolved system of government, he promised to transform agriculture, healthcare and infrastructure.
He was re-elected in 2017, becoming one of the few governors to complete two consecutive terms in office.
During his ten years as governor, Wa Iria introduced programmes aimed at boosting milk production, revived cooperative societies, promoted avocado and coffee farming, expanded road networks and invested heavily in maternal healthcare.
His administration also rolled out education bursaries and youth empowerment initiatives, achievements that continue to earn him loyalty from sections of Murang’a residents.
His tenure, however, was also dogged by allegations of corruption.
In 2024, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested him alongside several co-accused, including members of his family and business associates, over alleged irregular procurement of county publicity services.
Prosecutors accused him of abuse of office, conflict of interest, money laundering and unlawful acquisition of public property linked to contracts worth more than Sh542 million awarded to Top Image Media Consultants.
Wa Iria denied all the charges and has maintained that the prosecution is politically motivated.
The courts have allowed the criminal and civil recovery cases to proceed, with the EACC also seeking recovery of more than Sh547 million and assets it alleges were acquired through proceeds of corruption.
Following the end of his gubernatorial tenure, Wa Iria launched the Usawa Kwa Wote Party, arguing that Kenya needed a political movement focused on equitable distribution of national resources, economic justice and equal opportunities for all citizens regardless of region or social status.
He unsuccessfully sought the presidency in the 2022 General Election under the party’s banner but maintained that the outfit would remain active in national politics.
In recent years, Wa Iria has emerged as a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, frequently questioning its economic policies, taxation measures and what he describes as the slow pace of delivering economic relief to ordinary Kenyans.
His remarks have resonated with sections of the Mt Kenya region that have become increasingly dissatisfied with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
His political relationship with Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has attracted considerable attention.
While the two have occasionally shared common positions in criticising the national government and championing Mt.Kenya interests, Wa Iria has continued to maintain his own political identity through the Usawa Kwa Wote Party and has not formally folded his political vehicle into Gachagua’s movement.
Despite legal troubles, Wa Iria remains an influential figure in Murang’a and the wider Mt Kenya region.
His long association with cooperative societies, dairy farmers and grassroots networks continues to give him significant political influence.
Many observers believe his experience, organisational ability and loyal support base make him a key player in shaping the region’s political direction ahead of future elections.
Even as the auction of his Karen property looms and court proceedings continue, Wa Iria insists he will clear his name and remain active in national politics.
His journey,from corporate executive and two term governor to presidential candidate and embattled politician,reflects both the opportunities and the challenges that have defined Kenya’s era of devolved leadership.
His future political fortunes are likely to depend as much on the outcome of his legal battles as on his enduring influence among Mt Kenya voters.
