For more than three decades, Nancy Janet Gathungu has built a reputation as one of Kenya’s most respected public finance professionals, earning praise for her unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability and prudent management of taxpayers’ money.
Since her appointment as Kenya’s Auditor-General on July 17, 2020, she has transformed the Office of the Auditor-General into one of the country’s most influential oversight institutions, exposing billions of shillings in questionable public expenditure and forcing government agencies to account for how public resources are spent.
She attended Moi Girls High School before pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting and later a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Management.
Gathungu also pursued doctoral studies in Strategic Management, while complementing her academic qualifications with professional certifications as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and membership in several professional bodies, including the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and the Association of Women Accountants of Kenya (AWAK).
Her career began in public service in 1993 when she joined the Office of the Auditor-General.
Through diligence and technical competence, she steadily rose through the ranks, serving in Quality Assurance, Information Systems Audit, Forensic Audit and Learning and Development.
She also worked as Chief Internal Auditor at Kenyatta National Hospital before returning to the Office of the Auditor-General as Director of Audit and Quality Assurance, accumulating more than 25 years of experience in public sector auditing before taking over the country’s top audit office.
Then President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed her as Auditor-General in July 2020 following the retirement of Edward Ouko.
She inherited an office burdened by a backlog of audit reports and immediately pledged to restore timely reporting while safeguarding the institution’s constitutional independence.
Gathungu quickly cleared the backlog and strengthened audit processes, earning recognition both locally and internationally.
From multiple sources gathered by DNK-International we have established that during her tenure, Gathungu has become synonymous with exposing financial irregularities.
Her reports have highlighted questionable expenditure involving COVID-19 funds, procurement scandals, misuse of constituency development funds, irregular recruitment in county governments, concerns over public debt management, weaknesses in the Social Health Authority system and billions of shillings in unsupported government expenditure.
Her findings have frequently triggered parliamentary investigations and intensified public debate on accountability.
Gathungu’s success lies not merely in exposing financial misconduct but in strengthening confidence in constitutional oversight institutions.
Under her leadership, thousands of audit reports have been submitted to Parliament and county assemblies, oversight committees have been supported with evidence based investigations, and Kenya’s audit systems have received international recognition for institutional improvements.
Gathungu’s uncompromising style has attracted both admiration and criticism.
Anti-corruption campaigners, governance experts and many Kenyans regard her as one of the country’s strongest defenders of public resources because of her willingness to expose misuse of taxpayers’ money regardless of the institution or political affiliation involved.
At the same time, some political leaders have accused her office of being too harsh or selective whenever adverse audit findings touch on their institutions.
Nevertheless, she has consistently maintained that her constitutional duty is to report facts without fear or favour.
One of the defining messages associated with Gathungu has been her insistence that public money must always be traceable and accounted for under the law.
Upon assuming office, she acknowledged the inherited audit backlog and pledged to restore timely accountability, a promise that became one of the hallmarks of her leadership.
Her approach has reinforced the principle that no public institution should be exempt from scrutiny.
Away from audit reports, Gathungu is recognised as a mentor to young accountants and finance professionals.
She has participated in regional and international public finance programmes through organisations such as AFROSAI-E and the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions Development Initiative (IDI), where she has contributed to strengthening audit institutions across Africa.
As Kenya continues to grapple with demands for prudent public spending, Nancy Gathungu’s legacy is increasingly defined by her determination to safeguard public resources, strengthen constitutional oversight and remind public officials that every shilling collected from taxpayers must ultimately be accounted for.
