A 35 year old boda boda rider has been arrested in Bungoma County after police intercepted him transporting 288 rolls of dry leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa concealed inside a consignment of Napier grass.

The suspect, identified as Arnold Ouma, was arrested on Thursday following an operation by the DCI in Webuye West.

According to police, the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) became suspicious after spotting the rider carrying what appeared to be an unusual load of Napier grass while travelling along the Bukembe–Malaba Highway towards Webuye.

The officer discreetly monitored the rider’s movements before coordinating with colleagues from Webuye East.

He was eventually intercepted at Dina Flyover, about two kilometres west of Matisi Police Station.

Police said Ouma attempted to flee when confronted but was stopped.

During initial questioning, he allegedly claimed he was transporting chang’aa destined for a woman across River Nzoia.

A thorough inspection of the load, however, revealed 288 broom-like rolls containing dry leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa hidden beneath the Napier grass.

The motorcycle, together with the suspected narcotic drugs, was seized as exhibits.

The suspect is being held as investigations continue, with the case being handled by DCI Webuye West.
