A senior Kenya Prisons Service officer has been found dead inside his vehicle in an open field behind Spur Mall in Juja, Kiambu County.
The deceased was identified as 40 year old Eric Kiarie Wainaina, a Senior Superintendent of Prisons (SSP), attached to the Kenya Prisons Service Central Region Headquarters in Nyeri.
Police said the incident was reported at Mugutha police Station at about 10.30am after a member of the public, Geoffrey Macharia, alerted officers that a man appeared to be unconscious inside a vehicle parked in the open field.
Officers led by the OCS Mugutha proceeded to the scene where they found Wainaina unresponsive in the driver’s area of a silver Nissan Wingroad.
Senior police and prisons officials, including the Juja Sub-County Police Commander, Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer, the Kiambu County Prisons Commander and Crime Scene Investigation officers, visited the scene.
According to the police report, the officer was identified through documents found inside the vehicle, including his driving licence and passport.
Investigators also recovered his mobile phone, three empty 250ml bottles of Chrome spirit, an empty water bottle and Labtol tablets, which are associated with hypertension treatment.
A bag containing clothes and shoes believed to be his personal effects was also found in the vehicle.
Bystanders told police that Wainaina was a regular visitor to the area where he was found.
The scene was processed and documented by CSI officers from Juja before the body was moved to the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending a post-mortem examination.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Juja is handling investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
