King Lion Under Papa Charlie Roars On

By Our Music Affairs Correspondent

More than three decades ago, when reggae culture in Nairobi survived largely on underground loyalty and word of mouth, King Lion Sound was born and steadily grew into one of the most influential reggae sound systems Kenya has ever known.

Founded about 36 years ago by a small group of reggae enthusiasts that included the late Papa Lefty, King Lion Sound became firmly identified with Papa Charlie, the selector, MC and custodian who carried its spirit, discipline and message across generations.

From the early days of vinyl sessions and raw sound clashes in Nairobi estates and iconic venues such as Brilliant Club, City Hall grounds and open air community shows, King Lion Sound helped normalize reggae as a serious cultural force rather than a fringe genre, shaping how concerts were organized, how selectors interacted with crowds and how reggae messaging was delivered in Kenya.

Over the years, the sound performed widely across the country from Nairobi to Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu and other towns anchoring major reggae nights, anniversaries and clashes, while hosting and supporting both local and international reggae acts.

Today, King Lion Sound continues to appear at select reggae events and special celebrations, standing as a living archive of Kenya’s reggae journey.

Papa Charlie, is widely respected as a veteran pioneer whose age reflects a lifetime in music rather than a number, known more for wisdom on the mic than for biography on paper.

His trademark humility, gratitude and honesty have endeared him to fans, captured recently in his candid anniversary message thanking supporters while acknowledging the real challenges of modern events, yet celebrating the joy of music and unity.

The group’s journey has not been without setbacks as Papa Charlie told Daily News Kenya-International financial strain, changing nightlife policies, logistical hurdles and the commercialization pressures that have diluted reggae spaces, but survival itself has become one of its greatest successes.

From King Lion Sound and Papa Charlie, young people and reggae lovers learn the power of consistency, cultural pride, community building and respect for roots, that longevity is earned through service, not hype, and that reggae, when guarded with integrity, can outlive trends, venues and even generations.
