At least six people have been confirmed dead and eight others seriously injured following a deadly bandit attack at El-Anybura village in Illeret Sub-County, Marsabit County, near the Kenya–Ethiopia border.
According to a follow-up report from Illeret Police Station, the attack occurred at around 7:30pm yesterday when a group of heavily armed bandits believed to be from Ethiopia’s Hamar community ambushed villagers from the Dasnach community.
Security teams drawn from Illeret Sub County and the Border Patrol Unit (BPU) SARU of Dukana Subcounty, led by the Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) of Illeret Ward, responded to the incident following an earlier alert.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers established that the attackers indiscriminately opened fire on villagers, resulting in multiple casualties.
Police confirmed that four bodies were physically verified at the scene, while two others were reportedly buried before the officers arrived.
Eight people were injured, some in critical condition.
The injured victims sustained gunshot wounds and fractures, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Due to the severity of the injuries, all eight were taken to Bubua Health Centre in Ethiopia for specialised medical care.
Massive livestock theft
during the raid was done as the attackers reportedly made away with approximately 500 cattle and 1,400 goats, according to local residents.
Several livestock carcasses were also found scattered across the village, having been shot during the attack.
Police further reported that four suspected attackers believed to be from the Hamar community were killed during the incident.
Cross Border Security teams from both countries converged in a bid to track the attackers.

Authorities from both countries have said that coordinated security operations have helped contain the situation, with enhanced patrols and surveillance still in place along the border.
Investigations are ongoing as Kenyan and Ethiopian authorities continue joint efforts to prevent further cross border attacks and recover stolen livestock.
