Boy, 15, KJSEA Star, Hawking Omena to Keep Education Dream Alive

A bright future now hangs in the balance for Kevin Ogwedhi, a 15-year-old boy from Embakasi South, whose remarkable academic success has been overshadowed by poverty.

Kevin scored an impressive 55 points in the 2025 KCJSEA examinations at Kware Comprehensive School, earning him a coveted slot at Moi Mbiruri High School in Embu County.

For many, this would mark the beginning of a promising journey.

For Kevin, it marked the start of a painful struggle.

Unable to raise the required school fees, the young scholar has been forced to hawk omena at the entrance of Embakasi Girls High School, hoping to raise enough money to secure his place in secondary school.

Raised by a single mother, Kevin is the eldest child in a family that survives on casual jobs and small scale trading.

His mother, Salome Achieng, says the financial burden has become unbearable despite her son’s determination and discipline.

“Kevin has always believed education is the way out of poverty. He wants to become a mechanical engineer, and he is also a very talented footballer. It breaks my heart to see him miss school because we cannot afford the fees,” she said.

Teachers and neighbours describe Kevin as focused, respectful and gifted both in class and on the football pitch.

They fear his story may mirror that of many brilliant children whose dreams fade due to lack of support.

As the school calendar progresses in the country, Kevin waits anxiously, hoping for a helping hand that will allow him to report to school and continue chasing his dream.

Well-wishers willing to support Kevin Ogwedhi’s education can contact his mother on 0795 146 009.
