As Kenya marked the International Day of Clean Energy, the Kilifi County Energy Directorate, under the Department of Lands, Energy, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development, conducted a field visit to Uyombo Bandarini to assess the impact of ongoing and completed clean energy projects.
The visit was led by Chief Officer for Energy, Johnson Nzai, on behalf of CECM Jane Maiki Kamto, and focused on evaluating how renewable energy investments are transforming livelihoods and strengthening local economies.
At the Uyombo Fish Depot, the team inspected newly installed solar energy systems that now power fish refrigeration and processing.
The solar upgrade has cut electricity costs by up to 75 per cent, significantly boosting profitability for fishers while promoting sustainable fishing practices.
To enhance safety and spur economic activity, the county has also installed street lights and mulika mwizi lights across the area.
The improved lighting has increased security and enabled residents to extend business and social activities into the evening hours.
The delegation further visited Juhudi Widows Hope and Dreams, a community group of widows and single mothers operating a baking project in Uyombo Bandarini.
Through support from the Kenya Marine Fisheries Socio-Economic Development Programme, a biogas system was installed to provide clean, affordable cooking energy.
The initiative is reducing fuel costs, strengthening household incomes, and contributing to environmental conservation.
As the country commemorates International Clean Energy Day, Kilifi County reaffirmed its commitment to expanding clean, affordable energy solutions that empower communities, protect the environment, and drive inclusive local economic growth.
