Former Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Karanja Kibicho has taken sharp aim at President William Ruto over his repeated attacks on the United Opposition, which he routinely dismisses as “planless” and “agendaless.”
In a stinging rejoinder, the former powerful bureaucrat dismissed the narrative as misleading and intellectually dishonest.
“Lately, we are told the opposition is agenda-less and hawana akili because they have not built roads, dams, houses, hospitals, or rolled out social programs,” Kibicho said.
“On the surface, it sounds convincing. But ukiweka akili kidogo, things change.”
Kibicho pointed out what he described as a deliberate distortion of roles in a democratic system.
“The opposition does not control the budget. It does not award tenders. It does not run ministries or implement government programs,” he said. “Hiyo kazi ni ya serikali.”
He warned against what he termed the dangerous normalization of propaganda, arguing that holding the opposition responsible for development failures was both illogical and deceptive.
“Expecting the opposition to deliver development is like asking a referee to build the stadium, sell tickets, and still officiate the match,” Kibicho noted.
According to him, the true role of the opposition is neither flashy nor immediate, but it is essential.
“The real work of the opposition is slower and quieter,” he said. “Ni kuuliza maswali magumu. Why is this project overpriced? Why is it stalled? Mbona mkandarasi ni yule yule kila mahali? Why does a good social program die shortly after launch?”
Kibicho’s remarks land as a direct challenge to a government increasingly intolerant of scrutiny and a reminder that accountability, not applause, is the opposition’s primary mandate.
