From Boardrooms to the Ballot: The Rise, Falls and Reinvention of Millicent Omanga

By Our Reporter,Nairobi

Millicent Omanga is one of Nairobi’s most outspoken and resilient political figures, known for her sharp tongue, bold fashion sense and unrelenting ambition in Kenya’s male dominated political arena.

She was born in 1982 and represents a generation of leaders whose political journeys have been shaped as much by controversy as by opportunity.

Omanga is a graduate of business related studies, having trained in management and entrepreneurship, a background that anchored her early professional life in the private sector before she transitioned into public service.

Prior to elective politics, Omanga built her career in corporate management and later entered government through boardroom appointment, serving as a director at the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

Her stint on public boards elevated her national profile but also attracted scrutiny, placing her firmly in the public spotlight.

Her entry into politics was inspired by grassroots mobilisation within Nairobi and her close association with the Jubilee Party establishment during the reign of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

She became a fierce defender of the Kenyatta administration, often representing her views or airing them in media debates and public rallies.

This visibility propelled her to seek the Nairobi Woman Representative seat in 2017, a race she lost to the incumbent Esther Passaris but the defeat did little to slow her momentum.

She was nominated to the Senate, where she served as a nominated Senator, using the platform to cement her reputation as a combative politician.

Her tenure was marked by memorable remarks, unapologetic loyalty to power, and viral soundbites that made her a constant feature in political headlines and social media discourse.

Following the 2022 elections, Omanga aligned herself with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and President William Ruto, briefly enjoying proximity to the new power structure.

She even declined to take up a government appointment position which people close to her attributed it to her belief that the appointment was too “junior” to her.

However, cracks soon emerged, leading to a public fallout with the party.

Her eventual exit from UDA signaled yet another turning point in her political career.

Now, Omanga is reinventing herself once again through association with with the United opposition and Linda Mwananchi wing of the ODM party.

She’s positioning for a comeback as Nairobi Woman Representative in the 2027 General Election, this time mostly on an opposition ticket.

Her campaign narrative blends experience, defiance and the claim of having learned hard lessons from both victory and exclusion.

Despite political turbulence, her successes remain evident: rising from boardrooms to Parliament, breaking into national politics without elective victory, and maintaining relevance in an unforgiving political environment.

On her personal life, Omanga is married and with several children.

Admired by supporters for her courage and criticised by detractors for her confrontational style, Millicent Omanga remains a symbol of ambition, controversy and survival in Kenyan politics a proof that in Nairobi’s political theatre, exits are rarely final and comebacks are always possible.
