Five men are in police custody after allegedly impersonating officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), resisting arrest and injuring a police officer at a hotel in Oyugis town, Homa Bay County.
According to a police report recorded at Oyugis Police Station yesterday night, the incident was reported by Alex, the manager of Zuri Place Hotel.
The manager informed police that at around 2:00 p.m. on March 9, five men arrived at the hotel and checked into the premises after parking a Subaru Forester registration number KBM 195G within the hotel parking area.
While at the hotel, the group allegedly introduced themselves to the management as officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi.
They claimed they were searching for Homa Bay County MCA Vikins Bondo and alleged they had a warrant of arrest for him.
The suspects reportedly requested permission to search all the rooms in the hotel while looking for the MCA, a move that raised suspicion among the hotel management.
The hotel manager then alerted the Officer Commanding Station at Oyugis Police Station, prompting a team of police officers from the station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Rachuonyo South office to respond to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers confirmed the presence of the five men who had reportedly arrived at the hotel earlier at around noon using the Subaru Forester.
When police attempted to arrest the suspects, they allegedly resisted and in the process injured a Police officer Hesbon Mururi.
A search conducted on the vehicle in the presence of the suspects led to the recovery of a pair of handcuffs along with other personal items.
Police prepared an inventory of the recovered items which was signed by the suspects in the presence of officers.
The suspects arrested were identified as Edward Odhiambo, Clifford Otieno Obiero, Aenon Yiminyi, Onyango Nyandongo and Dennis Juma.
They are currently being held at Oyugis Police Station pending further investigations.
The Subaru Forester registration number KBM 195G has also been detained at the station as an exhibit.
The case remains under investigation by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Rachuonyo South.
