Police raid unregistered religious sect in Juja, 24 Arrested

Police in Juja, Kiambu County, have arrested 24 members of a suspected unregistered religious sect believed to be Mungiki following an operation conducted on Saturday afternoon.

According to a police incident report from Abba Salama Police Post, the operation was launched after an area administrator reported the existence of the sect within her locality.

A team of Police officers led by OCPD Bernard Ngungu carried out the operation and arrested the alleged sect leader, Robert Mburu aged 56 years old.

Police also apprehended 23 followers found at the scene, comprising 15 men and eight women.

During the raid, officers recovered several items believed to have been used in the sect’s activities, including cowrie shells, horns, a small sisal basket, and other paraphernalia.

Police also seized approximately eight litres of suspected traditional brew, muratina, from the shrine.

All the suspects were escorted to Kibii Police Station where they are being held pending processing and arraignment at the Thika Law Courts on Monday, March 16, 2026.

Police noted that some of the suspects became rowdy during the arrest and were reportedly singing traditional war songs.
