One Year On: How Evelyn Gisiri Nyamohanga Is Reshaping Policing in Nyanza region

By Our Reporter,Kisumu

One year after her appointment as Nyanza Regional Police Commander on March 18, 2025, Evelyn Gisiri Nyamohanga has steadily stamped her authority on the region’s security landscape, emerging as one of the most influential and reform-driven police commanders in the country.

Nyamohanga assumed office following a strategic reshuffle by Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

She replaced Patrick Tito, who was redeployed to Vigilance House as Lagat’s principal assistant.

Her appointment marked a significant moment, as she transitioned from being the Commandant of the National Police Service Senior Staff College in Emali to one of the most demanding regional commands in Kenya.

Now estimated to be in her 50’s Nyamohanga brings with her decades of experience rooted in discipline, operational command, and institutional leadership.

She holds a degree in Criminology and Security Studies and has undertaken multiple advanced courses in leadership, counter-terrorism, and security management, both locally and internationally.

Her foundation was laid at the Administration Police Training College, where she underwent rigorous paramilitary training that shaped her command philosophy.

Her career in the Administration Police Service has seen her rise through the ranks from junior command to senior leadership, serving in diverse assignments across Kenya.

She has handled operations in both urban centres and high rrisk areas, gaining a reputation for efficiency, calm decision-making, and firm enforcement of the law.

Her tenure at the Emali-based senior staff college was particularly notable, where she mentored top officers and introduced reforms aimed at modernizing policing approaches.

In the one year since taking charge in Nyanza, those people who talked to DNK-International credited her with strengthening intelligence led policing, improving coordination among security agencies, and revitalizing community policing structures.

Under her leadership, the region has witnessed enhanced crackdowns on organized crime, illicit brews, and cross border criminal activities, while also fostering closer engagement between police and local communities.

Security stakeholders in the region point to improved response times, better discipline among officers, and a renewed focus on accountability as some of the hallmarks of her leadership.

Her cross service background within the Administration Police Service and now Kenya police has also played a key role in bridging operational gaps within the broader National Police Service.

Despite the demanding nature of her role, Nyamohanga maintains a low public profile regarding her personal life, though she is understood to be married and a mother.

She has, however, remained vocal within professional circles on the importance of mentorship, particularly encouraging more women to pursue leadership roles within the security sector.

Her leadership philosophy continues to resonate within the service, often captured in her words: “Policing succeeds where trust exists between officers and the public, without that trust, enforcement alone cannot sustain order.”

As she marks one year in office, Evelyn Gisiri Nyamohanga’s tenure in Nyanza is increasingly being viewed as a model of steady, reform oriented leadership, reflecting the evolving face of policing in Kenya.
