For more than three decades, Bishop Pius Muiru has remained one of Kenya’s most recognisable Pentecostal Church preachers.
He rose from humble street evangelism to become a household name through radio, television and massive gospel crusades.
Although his unexpected entry into presidential politics in 2007 ended in a crushing electoral defeat.
His influence on Kenya’s evangelical movement remains significant.
Pastor Muiru is the founder and Senior Pastor of the Maximum Miracle Centre (MMC), headquartered at Embassy Cinema along Latema Road,Nairobi with branches in several parts of the country.
The Church traces its beginnings to 1995 when Muiru started preaching in Nairobi’s streets before moving to lunchtime meetings that rapidly attracted thousands of worshippers.
Born and raised in Murang’a County, Muiru attended Karega Primary School before joining Gituru Secondary School and later Muguga High School.
Before entering full time ministry, he helped his widowed mother run the family’s wholesale business after the death of his father when he was still a child.
His ministry gained national prominence in 1999 after launching the popular radio and television programme “Kuna Nuru Gizani” (There is Light in Darkness), making him one of Kenya’s pioneer radio and television evangelists.
Through the programme, broadcast nationally, he reached millions of listeners and viewers with messages of salvation, healing and hope.
The broadcasts transformed him into one of the country’s best known preachers and laid the foundation for large evangelistic crusades held in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri and other major towns.
His meetings at Uhuru Park and major stadiums regularly drew huge crowds seeking healing, deliverance and spiritual renewal.
Pastor Muiru is married to Rev. Dr. Lucy Muiru, who co-founded Maximum Miracle Centre and serves alongside him as a senior pastor.
DNK-International established in the course of compiling this report that,the couple has worked together in ministry for decades, overseeing church expansion, media evangelism and charitable programmes, including children’s outreach initiatives.
Academically, Muiru has theological training from Nations Theological University in California and has previously pursued further studies in Christian Ministry through distance learning in the United States.
Over the years, Muiru has mentored several younger ministers who have become influential church leaders.
Among those widely associated with his ministry mentorship is Pastor Ezekiel Odero of New Life Prayer Centre and Church in Mavueni, Kilifi County, who has publicly acknowledged Muiru’s influence and has visited him as a spiritual mentor.
In 2007, Muiru surprised both political and religious circles by declaring his presidential bid under the Kenya People’s Party (KPP).
Many expected his large Christian following to translate into votes.
Instead, he managed only about 9,600 votes nationally, finishing a distant fifth.
The outcome demonstrated that popularity in the pulpit does not necessarily translate into political support at the ballot box.
Analysts argued that church membership alone could not be converted into a political constituency, while many Christians remained divided along ethnic and party lines.
Although Muiru has rarely dwelt publicly on the defeat, the experience appeared to reinforce his commitment to full time ministry rather than elective politics.
Since then, he has concentrated on expanding church programmes, television evangelism through Nuru TV, mentorship of younger pastors and nationwide gospel outreach.
Throughout his ministry, Pastor Muiru became famous for memorable declarations such as “Kuna Nuru Gizani”, a phrase that became synonymous with hope, faith and God’s ability to transform difficult situations.
His sermons have consistently emphasised salvation, divine healing, miracles, prayer and perseverance.
Despite periods of controversy and criticism, Pastor Muiru remains one of the pioneers who helped shape Kenya’s modern televangelism movement.
His journey from street preacher to nationally recognised radio preacher,founder of one of Kenya’s largest Pentecostal ministries, mentor to emerging pastors and presidential aspirant continues to be cited as a reminder that influence in ministry does not always guarantee political success, but steadfast commitment to one’s calling can leave a lasting legacy across generations.
