Irate youths burn bown Ntiriniti Police Post during protest in Meru

By Our Correspondent, Meru.

About 300 irate youths burnt down Ntiriniti Police Post in Buuri West, Meru County, during protests linked to trees growing along electricity transmission lines.

Police said the youths had been protesting against owners of the trees, accusing them of preventing Kenya Power (KPLC) workers from cutting branches along the transmission lines.

The trees were blamed for repeated power blackouts in the area after heavy branches fell on the lines.

On Wednesday night at about 9.30pm, the youths barricaded the Kisima-Kiirua Road with stones before surrounding the home of a resident identified as Stanley Kimathi, whom they accused of obstructing KPLC workers from reconnecting electricity.

Officers from Subuiga Police Station responded and found the youths had lit bonfires near the police post.

The youths pelted the police Land Cruiser with stones before advancing towards the post.

The officers withdrew into the post as the youths surrounded the premises, continued throwing stones and set fire to the fence.

The fire spread to the police line, destroying all five wooden semi-permanent rooms.

Police reported that the rooms and officers’ government issued equipment were completely destroyed, with nothing salvaged.

The station Land Cruiser also sustained damage to two window panes.

A reinforcement team from Timau Police Station arrived and helped repel the protesters.

Police said investigations are ongoing, with a further progress report expected.
