Personality of the day From Church Pulpit to political comeback:The rise, fall and new political chapter of former Meru Governor Bishop Kawira Mwangaza

By Our Correspondent,Meru

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is once again making headlines following her proposed appointment as a Deputy Party Leader of the Linda Mwananchi political movement (party).

This marks another chapter in her eventful journey through Kenyan politics, business and Christian ministry.

Mwangaza, who made history in 2022 by becoming Meru County’s first woman governor, has built a public profile that combines politics, preaching, entrepreneurship and community philanthropy.

Her journey from humble beginnings in Buuri to the governor’s office, followed by her dramatic impeachment and return to the political scene, has made her one of Kenya’s widely discussed political figures.

Born in 1973 in Ontulili, Buuri, Meru County, Mwangaza grew up in a humble family.

She was among six children and lost her father when she was young.

Her mother’s financial difficulties meant that continuing with education was not easy.

At one point as she told Daily News Kenya-International,she travelled to Marsabit to work as a house help for her aunt, who later helped her secure admission to Moyale Girls Secondary School.

She attended CCM Ontulili Primary School between 1981 and 1988 before proceeding to Moyale Girls Secondary School, where she studied between 1989 and 1992.

Her academic journey continued in Uganda, where she enrolled at Kampala International University and graduated with a Bachelor of Education in Guidance and Counselling after studying between 2008 and 2011.

She also obtained a Certificate in Human Resource Management from Makerere University in 2009 and undertook additional studies at Meru University in 2012.

Mwangaza also holds a degree in Transformational Leadership from Pan African University.

Before joining elective politics, Mwangaza ventured into different businesses, including vegetable trading, cake baking, cement distribution and hardware.

She also ventured into media, establishing Baite TV, a Kimeru language television station that became an important platform for communicating with the Meru community.

Her involvement in Christian ministry became another defining aspect of her public life.

She is widely known as Bishop Kawira Mwangaza and is associated with Baite Family Fellowship Church, located near Meru town.

The church complex also houses facilities associated with her family’s media and other activities.

Her husband, Murega Baichu, is a Gospel musician and Pastor.

The couple have children and have worked together in business, media and community initiatives.

Mwangaza has also been associated with the philanthropic initiative known as Okolea Kaana Ka Meru, which focuses on supporting vulnerable children, widows, orphans and disadvantaged families through education assistance, food, clothing and other forms of support.

Although she is publicly identified as a bishop, the exact date on which she was ordained or consecrated as a pastor or bishop is not clearly established.

Mwangaza’s marital status has also attracted public interest, particularly during her tenure as Governor.

With her husband Baichu, they have frequently appeared together at public functions, church events and political gatherings.

Their relationship occasionally became part of county politics, especially after Mwangaza appointed her husband to voluntary positions in the county administration in September 2022.

She named him patron of the Meru Youth Service and Meru Hustlers Ambassador, saying the positions would not attract salaries or allowances.

However, the appointments became part of the allegations raised against her during the impeachment proceedings.

Politically, Mwangaza first attempted to enter elective politics in 2013 when she contested the Buuri parliamentary seat but lost to Gatobu Kinoti.

The experience was financially difficult, and she later disclosed that she and her husband had spent approximately Sh20 million in the campaign, leaving them heavily indebted.

She said that after that they moved to Ruai, Nairobi, where they sold onions and tomatoes as they attempted to rebuild their finances.

She returned to the political arena in 2017, this time contesting the Meru Woman Representative position as an independent candidate.

She won, defeating Florence Kajuju, and used her position to advance community programmes, including her Operation Okolea initiative.

Her biggest political breakthrough came during the August 9, 2022 General Election, when she contested the Meru gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate.

She defeated the incumbent Governor Kiraitu Murungi and former Senator Mithika Linturi, securing 209,148 votes.

Her victory made her the first woman to serve as Meru County governor.

However, her administration was characterised by persistent disagreements with Members of the Meru County Assembly, with whom she had a difficult working relationship.

The disagreements resulted in several attempts to remove her from office.

She survived the first impeachment attempt in December 2022 after the Senate rejected the proposed removal.

An impeachment attempt in October 2023 also failed to remove her from office after the Senate intervened.

Her political fortunes changed on August 20, 2024, when the Senate upheld a third impeachment motion against her.

Senators found her guilty on three charges: gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The Senate vote effectively ended her tenure as Meru governor.

Mwangaza challenged the decision in court, arguing that the impeachment process was unfair and constitutionally flawed.

However, on March 14, 2025, the High Court, through Justice Bahati Mwamuye, upheld the Senate’s decision and dismissed her petition.

Her deputy, Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, assumed office as Meru governor on March 17, 2025.

The ruling made Mwangaza the first governor elected in the 2022 General Election to be removed through impeachment, with her removal surviving a subsequent court challenge.

Despite losing the governorship, Mwangaza has continued participating in political activities and exploring new political alliances.

In July 2025, she was appointed party leader of the Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP), replacing Charles Wambora.

However, another political development emerged on October 30, 2026, when Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi party leader Edwin Sifuna announced that Mwangaza had agreed to leave UMP and join the Linda Mwananchi Movement Party.

Under the proposed leadership structure unveiled during the movement’s national headquarters launch in Lavington, Nairobi, Mwangaza was named among the deputy party leader designates, alongside former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo and Mavoko MP Patrick Makau.

A fourth deputy position was reserved for a representative from the Coast region.

Sifuna announced that the proposed leadership appointments would be presented to the movement’s National Delegates Convention scheduled for November 13, 2026, for approval.

This means Mwangaza’s position is currently a proposed appointment rather than a fully ratified party office.

Her inclusion in the proposed leadership team signals another attempt to establish herself in national politics following her departure from the Meru governorship.

Throughout her political journey, Mwangaza has become known for outspoken remarks, particularly during election campaigns and her disagreements with political opponents.

One of her memorable campaign statements came in 2022 when she declared that her opponents had underestimated her ability to win the Meru gubernatorial contest.

In an interview with one of the media stations, she recalled telling her opponents: “They said I cannot run a County but I told both Kiraitu that I would get more votes than him at the ballot.”

She also described her eventual victory as a prophecy come true.

Another memorable statement was her campaign promise: “Just give me a few months and you will see. Meru will be a very different County.”

She made the remark while outlining her plans for the county after winning the 2022 election.

Her political journey has also been accompanied by recognition for her community work.

Among the honours that she holds are the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW), awarded in 2018, recognition as Woman of the Year by the African Women Leadership Network in 2019, and the African Union Trailblazer Award in 2020.

She was also recognised by CEO Global in 2021.
Beyond politics, her contribution to community welfare through Okolea Kaana Ka Meru remains an important part of her public profile.

The initiative has been associated with helping vulnerable children, supporting widows and orphans, providing educational assistance, building houses for disadvantaged families and distributing essential supplies.

From working as a house help to becoming a businesswoman, television station owner, bishop, Woman Representative and Meru governor, Mwangaza’s life has taken several different turns.

Her removal from office in 2024, the subsequent court ruling in 2025 and her proposed appointment to the Linda Mwananchi Party’s deputy leadership in 2026 have added further chapters to her political story.

As Linda Mwananchi prepares for its November 2026 delegates’ convention, attention will be on whether the proposed leadership appointments receive formal approval and what responsibilities Mwangaza will assume in the movement.

Her next political chapter could therefore see the former Meru Governor transition from county leadership battles to a broader role in national party politics.
