Police arrest suspect over Sh586,500 fake NSSF job scam

By Our Reporter,Nairobi.

Police in Nairobi have arrested a man suspected of defrauding three job seekers from Nyamira County of a total of Sh586,500 by allegedly promising to secure them employment at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

The suspect, identified as Vincent Ongera Mambo, was arrested by an undercover team from Central Police Station around Kencom area on Tuesday evening following reports from the victims.

According to a police report made at around 6.00pm the first complainant, identified as Vane Kemunto Morara, reported that she had sent the suspect Sh130,000 as a down payment towards a purported job opportunity as an office assistant.

The complainant was allegedly told to pay a total of Sh400,000 to secure the position.

The suspect reportedly claimed to possess genuine NSSF employment letters and sent her an image of one of the purported letters through WhatsApp.

However, when the woman travelled to Nairobi to complete the payment and collect the documents, the suspect allegedly demanded that she send the outstanding balance before they could meet.

The demand raised her suspicions, prompting her to report the matter to the police.

Investigations further established that two other job seekers from Nyamira County, identified as Isaac Manyara and Gloria Kemunto, had allegedly communicated with the same suspect over similar employment opportunities.

Manyara reportedly sent Sh256,500, while Kemunto allegedly paid Sh200,000, bringing the total amount received from the three complainants to Sh586,500.

Following the complaints, officers from Central Police Station reportedly set a trap that led to the suspect’s arrest in the Kencom area of Nairobi.
Police recovered eight NSSF calling letters suspected to be fake, alongside several documents believed to have been used to convince prospective victims of the legitimacy of the purported recruitment process.

The recovered documents included an Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) clearance certificate, a Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) compliance certificate, a police clearance certificate, a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) tax compliance certificate and a Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) certificate.

The suspect is being handled by officers at Central Police Station as investigations into the alleged fraud continue.

The case has been classified as obtaining money by false pretences.
