President William Ruto has announced a Sh2 billion investment to construct student hostels for about 5,000 university, technical college and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students in Taita-Taveta County as he began his tour of the Coast region on Saturday.

Ruto, who was speaking at Funju in Wundanyi Constituency, laid the foundation stone for a Sh145 million student hostel project at Wumingu Technical and Vocational College (Wumingu TVC).

The facility will provide 340 beds for students.

Ruto said the hostel programme, being implemented under the Affordable Housing Programme, is intended to address accommodation challenges facing students while expanding access to university, technical and medical training opportunities.

He also pledged that the road from Wundanyi town to Wumingu TVC would be tarmacked as a priority.

The President further promised to ensure reliable access to water and electricity for the college and the surrounding community.

The projects according to Ruto form part of the government’s broader investment in education infrastructure and development.
