Politics surrounding the push to elect The Equitable Party leader and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 General Election took centre stage on Friday during the burial of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police Lazarus Simiyu Opicho in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.

Opposition leaders used the burial ceremony to call for a one term presidency of President William Ruto while condemning what they described as the frequent withdrawal of security personnel attached to opposition leaders.
Among those present was Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who arrived at the burial ceremony amid heightened political exchanges over the country’s leadership and the treatment of opposition figures.
Tensions rose as opposition speakers intensified their criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, prompting the intervention of senior Administration Police officer Masoud Mwinyi and government spokesperson Charles Owino, who sought to control the proceedings.

Owino was heard complaining that the speakers were doing a disservice to the occasion by turning their addresses into attacks against the President.
The exchanges highlighted growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 General election.
