DNK International Martin Kamotho, popularly known as “Githeri Man” who was recognized and awarded by former President Uhuru Kenyatta during the 2017 Jamhuri day celebrations for the Head of State Commendation (HSC), Civilian Division, for his actions during the August 8, 2017, General Election. Kamotho became an instant national sensation after a photo of him eating githeri from a polythene bag while standing in a long voting queue in Kayole went viral.
Some viewed the award as a mockery of the state honor system, others saw it as a moment of light heartedness during a highly polarized political season, prompting Kenyatta to reward him.
Beyond the State commendation, Kamotho received is said to have received various corporate rewards, including a new Samsung S8 phone from a communications firm and cash tokens.
However his fame, he faced personal challenges, including struggling with alcoholism and undergoing rehabilitation.
