The DPP Renson Igonga has secured a 14 days detention order against Police Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is linked to the murder of psychiatrist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.

Sang, who was arrested in Eldoret on Saturday, appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai where the DCI sought more time to complete with their investigations before charging him officially.

The court authorised his detention at Kilimani Police Station to allow investigators to interrogate him, record his statement, conduct searches, pursue possible recoveries, facilitate a mental health assessment and conclude investigations before charging him.

The case will be mentioned on November 9.

Dr Mutiso, a former director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was shot dead in Nairobi on July 29.

Investigators have also linked Sang to the September 9, 2025, murder of lawyer Mbobu.

The prosecution alleges that the inspector played a key role in planning the killing and is expected to face charges alongside other suspects already charged before the Kibera High Court.

Court documents indicate that investigators recovered two spent cartridges and two bullets from the scene of Dr Mutiso’s murder.

Ballistic examinations reportedly linked the ammunition components to a Mini Jericho pistol that was later recovered and examined.

Investigators established that the firearm had been issued to Sang.

The DPP has approved murder charges against five suspects in connection with Mbobu’s killing.

They are Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her children Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa, and police constables Julius Kipkoeach Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemoi Borboroi.
