A police officer attached to the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) has been arrested in Athi River after being found in possession of counterfeit currency during a late night incident at a local M-Pesa shop.
According to a report filed at Athi River Police Station on Friday night,the suspect was identified as Constable Patrick Nyaga.
He was nabbed following a tip off from a vigilant shop attendant.
The complainant, Veronichah Magondu, a resident of Embakasi within Athi River, reported that at around 11.00pm, the officer approached her M-Pesa shop seeking to deposit Sh 20,000.
However, upon examining the cash, she discovered that the notes twenty in total, each of Sh.1,000 denomination were counterfeit, all bearing identical serial numbers.
Sensing foul play, Magondu confronted the suspect, triggering an altercation that drew the attention of members of the public.
The suspect was quickly cornered as the situation escalated, prompting intervention by police officers who visited the scene and effected the arrest.
The counterfeit notes were recovered and secured as exhibits as investigations commenced.
Police have since confirmed the suspect’s identity as a serving police officer attached to the Internal Affairs Unit.
