A Masaai herdsman lost his life yesterday while attempting to rescue a calf from a river near Sagana.
In a report made at Sagana Police Station yesterday evening it was stated that the incident was first witnessed by a local resident, Lavenda Kabatha, from Githuguya sub-location.
She reported that while walking home from Sagana town, she reached Kanyiriri River bridge and saw a man jump into the river in an attempt to save a calf that had strayed into the water.
In a sudden turn of events, the calf managed to escape from the river, leaving the man struggling in the fast moving waters.
It is suspected that he was overwhelmed and drowned.
Police officers from Sagana, alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kirinyaga West, swiftly responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, they established that the deceased was identified as Kererwa Lekishan, a 28 year old Maasai from Longido District in Tanzania.
He was employed as a herdsman at Gitumbi village in Sagana location by a local resident, Joseph Kibui.
The deceased’s personal belongings, including clothes, shoes, an umbrella, and a mobile phone, were recovered at the riverbank,an indication that he had entered the water in a desperate rescue attempt.
With the assistance of members of the public, the body was later retrieved from the river.
A preliminary examination revealed no visible physical injuries, pointing to drowning as the likely cause of death.
The body has since been moved to Kerugoya Hospital Mortuary for preservation, awaiting formal identification by family members and a post mortem examination.
