Two people have lost their lives following a tragic gas explosion in Nyalenda ‘A’ slums, within Kisumu East Sub-County.
Police at Kasagam Police Station in their report this evening said the incident was reported by area Assistant Chief Peter Otieno Ogoye, who alerted them about a fire outbreak in the Western area of Nyalenda ‘A’ sub-location.
The officers, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kisumu East and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel from Kisumu County, responded swiftly to the scene.
Investigations established that a one room mud house within a rental compound was engulfed in flames following a gas explosion.
The victims were identified as 35 year old Yvonne Akinyi and Benson Mainwa, whose age was not immediately established.
Both succumbed to fatal burn injuries during the incident.
Initial accounts from fellow tenants indicate that a Pink Pro gas cylinder was in use for cooking at the time.
It is suspected that gas leakage may have occurred, and the situation escalated when one of the victims reportedly lit a cigarette nearby, triggering the explosion.
A third occupant of the house, Pamela Onyango, believed to be the mother, miraculously escaped unhurt.
Nothing was salvaged from the inferno.
The gas cylinder believed to have caused the explosion was recovered at the scene and secured as an exhibit.
