GBV WATCH:Sim swap suspect arrested after SIM domestic dispute in Migori

A suspected SIM swap fraudster is in police custody following a dramatic turn of events triggered by a domestic dispute in Oruba Ragana area, Suna West.

According to police at Oruba Police Station,village elders from Milimani responded to a distress call from a woman identified as Neema Muhonja yesterday who alleged she was being subjected to domestic violence by her husband, Peter Okinyi Owuor.

Upon arriving at the couple’s residence, the elders attempted to mediate the situation. However, as the woman began packing her belongings in preparation to leave, a bundle of identification cards tied with a rubber band accidentally fell from a suitcase, raising suspicion.

When questioned, the suspect reportedly claimed that he intended to use the identification cards to register SIM cards on behalf of their owners.

The explanation prompted further scrutiny by the elders, who conducted a search and recovered three SIM card registration gadgets associated with Safaricom and Airtel, though the devices were found without batteries.

Police added that,the elders immediately escorted the suspect to Oruba Police Station, where they handed over a total of 48 identification cards along with the recovered gadgets.

The suspect was re-arrested and placed in custody as investigations commenced.
