Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has been attacked and assaulted by a group of armed individuals in Kisumu.

A statement from his communicatiin team described the incident as a targeted and politically motivated attack.

The statement added that the Senator had earlier made a routine visit to the Acacia area for personal grooming before heading to a Java Restaurant outlet, where he met a friend and interacted freely with members of the public for about thirty minutes.

The situation took a dramatic turn when a group of armed assailants confronted him, questioning his political stance.

Witnesses indicate that the group demanded to know why the legislator supports a one term political position instead of a two term agenda, before subjecting him to physical manhandling.

Despite the volatile situation, the Senator’s security team exercised restraint and did not discharge firearms, a move credited with preventing possible injuries to civilians who were present at the busy public venue.

“This was a calculated attack that has no place in a democratic society,” said Derick Luvega, Director of Communication at the Vihiga Senate Office.

Siaya Governor James Orengo visited him at a Kisumu hospital where he’s receiving medical attention.

Luvega further cautioned against generalizing the incident to reflect on the residents of Kisumu, noting that the Senator had earlier moved freely and engaged warmly with the public without any hostility.

Investigations into the incident are now underway, with the Police being urged to act swiftly.

CCTV footage from the restaurant is expected to play a key role in identifying and helping in apprehending the perpetrators.
