From Underdog to Power Player: The Rise of Nyandarua Senator John Methu in Central Kenya Politics

By Our Correspondent,OlKalou

John Methu has rapidly emerged as one of the most talked about young politicians in Kenya.

He has transformed from an “underdog” candidate into a formidable voice in Central Kenya’s shifting political landscape.

Methu was born on February 14, 1991, and raised in Kinangop Constituency, Nyandarua County.

His journey to national prominence reflects resilience, grassroots connection, and a sharp political instinct.

He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at Pwani University, graduating in 2017 after completing his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education at Goshen High School in Nakuru.

Shortly after university, Methu stepped into county politics, serving as personal secretary to then Nyandarua County Assembly Speaker James Wahome Ndegwa from 2018 until election of 2022.

However, his political ambitions had already taken shape a year earlier when he made his first bid for the Nyandarua Senate seat in 2017 under the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, losing to then incumbent Senator Githiomi Mwangi.

Undeterred, Methu recalibrated his strategy and returned stronger in the 2022 General Election.

Running on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket led by President William Ruto, he first defeated seasoned contenders, including Githiomi Mwangi and lawyer Kinyanjui Theuri, in a fiercely contested party primaries.

He then stunned political observers by winning the Senate seat with 185,337 votes, becoming one of the youngest senators in Kenya at just 31 years old.

His victory was widely viewed as a triumph of grassroots mobilization over financial muscle.

Methu has often recounted how ordinary wananchi fueled his campaign.

“Especially the local people, not the big people that you would expect… there are people I went to campaign in their market, and the women offered to fundraise for me,” he told DNK-International in OlKalou recently.

Since assuming office, Methu has positioned himself as a vocal advocate for youth and grassroots interests.

“I’ll be there to push the legislative agenda about the issues affecting young people… I’ll be their champion and their ambassador,” he pledged during his campaign, a promise that continues to define his political messaging.

In recent months, Methu’s political profile has expanded beyond Nyandarua.

He has aligned himself with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and the emerging Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), signaling a significant shift within the Mount Kenya political bloc.

This alignment places him at the heart of a growing movement seeking to challenge President Ruto’s influence in the region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His rising influence was dramatically highlighted during a requiem mass for the late Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, where his microphone was abruptly switched off as he addressed mourners in an incident that quickly went viral and was interpreted by supporters as a sign of his increasingly bold and confrontational stance within regional politics.

The moment amplified his image as a defiant voice willing to challenge established power structures.

The requiem mass was attended by among others President Ruto and a host of leaders.

Political analysts now view Methu as part of a new generation of leaders reshaping Central Kenya’s political direction.

His appeal among young voters, coupled with his grassroots credibility, has made him a key mobilizer in Nyandarua and beyond.

As the region recalibrates its loyalties, his influence is expected to play a critical role in determining voting patterns in upcoming by-elections and the 2027 polls.

Beyond politics, Methu maintains a relatively private personal life.

He is married to Florence Mbugua, and together they have a daughter.

His life has also been marked by personal loss, his mother passed away in 2018, and his father, Michael Maigo Waweru, died in December 2023, leaving him closely tied to his siblings and extended family.

As Kenya’s political landscape begins to take shape ahead of the next electoral cycle, Senator Methu stands out as a youthful yet increasingly influential figure, one whose journey from a little known aspirant to a central player in Mount Kenya politics could significantly shape the region’s future direction.
