A multi-agency police operation targeting illicit brew in Namanjala,Kwanza, Trans Nzoia County, turned fatal on Tuesday night after a suspect was shot during a violent confrontation with the police.
The team, led by Maili Saba OCS Chief Inspector Mwangi, descended on the home of Musa Namaholo, a suspected local brewer, at approximately 11:30 PM who closed doors and allegedly defied orders to surrender as he issued death threats.
Police were forced to breach the entrance to gain entry into the house when the situation escalated after the suspect allegedly attempted to attack the officers with a spear.
In response, an officer discharged a firearm, hitting the suspect with a single shot to the face and neck.
Although the suspect was rushed to Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police recovered the weapon used in the attack and seized 440 litres of chang’aa stored in multiple jerrycans across the premises.
The suspect’s body is being preserved at the hospital’s mortuary pending a post-mortem examination as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) launches investigation into the incident.
