Fire inferno destroys property at St. Mary’s, Lushangonyi

A fire incident yesterday at St. Mary’s High School Lushangonyi in Taita Taveta county destroyed property worth thousands of shillings.

The incident occured after a dormitory was completely razed in the morning.

According to a report filed at Lushangonyi Police Post, the school’s Deputy Principal, Godwin Namaru, alerted police after a loud explosion like bang was heard at around 5:45 a.m. while students were attending morning prep classes.

Moments later, flames were spotted coming from the dormitory section.

Police officers from Wundanyi, alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), responded swiftly to the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire gutted Wesu ‘A’ dormitory, reducing it to ashes and destroying all student belongings, including mattresses and personal boxes.

The affected dormitory housed approximately 130 students, all in Form Three and Form Four.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, as the students were already in class at the time of the incident.
