A 98 year old woman has died after a house fire gutted part of her home in Kimaeti, Bungoma County yesterday night.
The incident according to police was reported at around 11:30pm by Jackson Nabangala Werunga, the area Nyumba Kumi chairman, who alerted officers from Myanga Police Station about a fire at the home of Bishop Uwezo in Kimaeti Market.
Police officers who rushed to the scene established that the fire had extensively destroyed household property inside one room of a three bedroom permanent house that reportedly had no electricity connection.
The body of Damaris Makuku Okeno, a 98 year old woman, was found inside the burnt room with severe burn injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that shortly before the incident, Nancy Waswa, a daughter of the deceased, had taken food to her mother’s house and allegedly lit a candle for lighting due to lack of electricity.
The candle was reportedly placed on a non-functional television set positioned on a wardrobe drawer before it allegedly fell onto clothes stored nearby, sparking a fast-spreading fire.
Neighbours responded after an alarm was raised, but the elderly woman had already succumbed to the blaze by the time rescuers gained access to the room.
Police processed and documented the scene and took photographs before the body was moved to Kocholia Sub-County Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
The matter is under investigation by officers from Bumula Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office (SCCIO).
