Motorists within the Nairobi have been warned to expect major traffic disruptions beginning today night as Kenya hosts the high-profile Africa Forward Summit scheduled for May 10–12, 2026.

The Government Spokesperson’s Office on Saturday issued a public traffic advisory indicating that heavy VVIP movement will be experienced along key highways and roads leading into and out of the capital city during the summit period.

According to the advisory, intermittent traffic stoppages and delays are expected along Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, Thika Road, Limuru Road and Kiambu Road as delegations and heads of state move between airports, hotels and conference venues.

Roads within Nairobi’s CBD that will be closed from today midnight for regular traffic include City Hall Way, Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue and Taifa Road.

Security officials also confirmed that access around the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), the main summit venue, will be heavily restricted, with only accredited conference vehicles and authorised personnel allowed entry.

President William Ruto, while attending the 120th anniversary celebrations of Maseno School in Kisumu County on Saturday, disclosed that more than 30 African Presidents are expected to attend the continental summit in Nairobi.

Speaking during a press briefing at the regional police headquarters, Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohammud assured residents and visitors that elaborate security and traffic management measures had already been finalised ahead of the summit.

He stated that the National Police Service was working jointly with other security agencies, including teams from France and the United Nations, to ensure the safety of delegates and smooth coordination of air and ground surveillance operations.

Mohammud noted that apart from the major roads already identified for temporary disruptions, there will also be partial closures of roads leading to hotels hosting visiting presidents and foreign dignitaries.

He appealed to motorists to plan their journeys early, use alternative routes where possible and cooperate with security officers managing traffic within the city and surrounding highways.

“We expect cooperation during this period. Avoid restricted areas,it’s our humble appeal to observe the directives,” said the police boss.

He further assured international guests attending the summit that their security would be fully guaranteed throughout their stay in Kenya.

“We welcome all our international guests and assure them of their security. Let us make this summit safe and secure,” he added.

Members of the public have meanwhile been urged to allow extra travel time, comply with police directions and remain patient during the temporary traffic control measures expected during the three day summit.
