Tension gripped residents near the Gilgil railway level crossing today morning after a locomotive train collided with a school bus carrying 49 students.
According to police reports from Gilgil Railways patrol base, the accident occurred along the Naivasha–Nakuru railway line.
The locomotive train was travelling from Naivasha towards Nakuru when it rammed into a school bus belonging to Teresia’s Academy at the railway crossing.
The train was being driven by J. Kimwere and guarded by V. Ochiko, while two police officers Julius Tarus and Milka Ndung’u were escorting it at the time of the incident.
Police identified the school bus driver as Suleiman Gitau Mwalimu.
Police confirmed that all 49 students aboard the bus survived the crash, with only minor injuries reported.
The injured victims were rushed to Gilgil Health Care Clinic and Gilgil Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
The damaged school bus was detained at Gilgil Railways Patrol Base pending inspection and further investigations, while the driver is being held at Naivasha Police Station as investigations continue.
