Police officer arrested after firing indiscriminately at Lamu Camp

A police officer attached to Salama Camp in Lamu County has been arrested after firing 21 rounds of ammunition indiscriminately while armed and reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

According to a police report filed at Kibaoni Police Station yesterday evening,the incident occurred on Friday at around 4:30pm when Police Constable Bashir Abdi Kadit returned to the camp from a drinking spree and discovered that his firearm had earlier been secured in the armoury.

The officer allegedly retrieved a rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition belonging to another officer who was exercising at the time.

He then reportedly discharged 21 rounds without authorization or lawful cause while shouting threatening words in Swahili demanding the whereabouts of one of his seniors a sergeant.

No injuries were reported during the shooting incident, although the gunfire caused alarm within the camp.

Officers managed to subdue and disarm the suspect before the Officer OCS Kibaoni responded to the scene.

A subsequent search on the officer allegedly recovered substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, including two rolls wrapped in a red carrier bag, alongside muguka and snuff.

The rifle, magazine, spent cartridges and suspected narcotics were seized as exhibits.

The suspect was placed in custody pending administrative and possible legal action.
