Nairobi mechanic swept away while swimming in river Nzoia during funeral visit

A 35 year old Nairobi based mechanic has drowned and died after being swept away by strong currents in river Nzoia near Ugunja, Siaya County.

The mechanic was on a funeral visit in the area.

He was identified as Francis Olum from Nairobi who together with colleagues had travelled to attend a funeral in Sidindi area on yesterday.

The group, said to be mechanics operating in Pangani, Nairobi, had travelled in an Isuzu matatu minibus.

According to a report filed at Ugunja Police Station, the incident occurred at around 10:40 a.m. near Nzoia Bridge along the Kisumu–Busia road.

Witnesses told police that after attending the funeral activities, the group proceeded to River Nzoia to bathe.

While swimming, Francis was reportedly overwhelmed by strong and fast moving waters and was swept away.

Police officers from Ugunja Police Station visited the scene and launched efforts to retrieve the body, but the operation was hindered by the river’s powerful currents.
