A 39 year old man suspected of impersonating a police officer has been arrested in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, following an operation that led to the recovery of suspected government materials including handcuffs, police attire, binoculars and communication equipment.
According to a police report recorded at Mtwapa Police Station yesterday night,officers were investigating a complaint in which a member of the public had been harassed, handcuffed and threatened by an individual posing as a police officer.
Acting on the leads, officers traced and arrested the suspect, identified as Abdalla Ali Habbib, within Mtwapa Township at about 7.20pm.
Following preliminary interrogation, detectives escorted the suspect to his residence in the Kongowea–Uwanja wa Mbuzi area.
A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of several items believed to be government stores, including a pair of handcuffs without a serial number, a pair of jungle shorts, a jungle shirt, a jungle head scarf, two pairs of binoculars, a dagger and communication gadgets.
Police said the suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding possession of the recovered items.
All the items were seized and retained as exhibits.
The suspect was later escorted to Mtwapa Police Station, where he was placed in custody pending processing and arraignment in court. Investigations are ongoing.
