Fisherman Seriously Injured in Hippopotamus Attack in Tana River

A 29 year old fisherman is nursing serious injuries after he was attacked by a hippopotamus while on a fishing expedition in the Darga area of Tana Delta,Tana River County.

According to a report recorded at Gamba Police Station, the incident occurred yesterday around 2:30 p.m. when Salim Omar Abdalla and his companion, Adam Kofa, were navigating a flooded section of the area in a canoe during a fishing mission.

Police said the hippopotamus, which had been grazing nearby, suddenly entered the water and attacked the canoe, biting it and splitting it into two.

The animal then turned on Abdalla, inflicting severe injuries to his left shoulder and the back of his right thigh.

The injured fisherman was immediately rushed to Garsen Level IV Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition and is receiving treatment.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers from Minjilla were informed of the incident by the police officers who arrived at the scene and are expected to take appropriate action.
