Six students of St Triza Mutalia High School in Joska, Machakos County, have been arrested after assaulting a school watchman during a student unrest incident on Saturday night.

According to police, the disturbance occurred at about 9:00 p.m. when Deputy Principal Thomas Monyi, who resides in a house adjacent to the boys’ dormitory, heard commotion from within the school compound.

Upon checking, he reportedly observed a group of students running around the premises while shouting.

Teachers responded immediately and found the school’s watchman, Joseph Maroko, fleeing from a group of students who were allegedly attacking him.

The watchman sustained injuries to his left ear and the ring finger of his right hand during the incident.

School staff managed to calm the situation and assembled the students before asking the watchman to identify those involved in the assault.

He reportedly identified six students as the attackers.

Police officers from Joska Police Station were dispatched to the scene and restored order.

Preliminary investigations established that the unrest was triggered after the six students were earlier found in possession of three rolls of cannabis and a bottle of an alcoholic drink.

Police believe the students were angered by the watchman’s role in the discovery.

The injured watchman was advised to seek medical treatment, while the six suspects, aged between 14 and 16 years, were taken into police custody.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with police indicating that further reports will follow.
