A contingent of police officers from Bangale Police Station yesterday engaged in a firefight with an armed militia group in Biyagadud, Bangale, Tana River County following a reported shooting incident in the area.
According to a police report, officers on patrol responded to the incident at about 10:00 a.m. and encountered approximately 40 armed individuals believed to be members of the Wardey community.
The group had reportedly taken their goats to a local watering point while armed.
Police said the militia opened fire upon noticing the officers, prompting a return of fire.
A fierce exchange ensued, with the officers disengaging and withdrawing from the scene without sustaining injuries.
A reinforcement team drawn from Madogo Police Station, the DCI, Administration Police Service (APS) Madogo, GSU Chartende, and the Bangale Sub-County security team was subsequently deployed.
The team joined local officers in securing and documenting the scene before conducting patrols in the area.
During the operation, several officers discharged ammunition, including rounds fired from G3, Gilboa, AK-47, and FN rifles.
Following the incident, the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) for Bangale Sub-County convened a public baraza, urging residents to maintain peace and coexist peacefully.
Security personnel have since intensified patrols across the area to prevent further violence and restore calm.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
