Police Probe Destruction of 1,600 Kenya Seed Maize Plants in Trans Nzoia

Police in Endebess,Trans Nzoia County, have launched investigations into the malicious destruction of a maize seed plantation at a Kenya Seed Company farm after unknown intruders cut down more than 1,600 maize plants.

According to a report recorded at Chepchoina Police Station yesterday, the incident was reported by Anthony Kateai, an Internal Security Officer with Kenya Seed Company attached to Elgon Downs and based at Babu Farm.

The report indicates that during the night of June 20 and June 21 unknown persons gained access to Kiwanja A/Turkana Field at Kenya Seed Elgon Downs, located within Kwa Babu Farm in Twiga Location and damaged a maize seed crop by cutting down the plants.

Police officers who visited the scene established that a total of 1,667 maize stalks of the H6213 seed maize variety had been cut down, causing significant damage to the plantation.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the destruction may have been carried out by crop guards employed as casual workers at the farm, although no arrests have been made so far.

Police are continuing with investigation to determine the motive behind the vandalism and assess the full extent of losses incurred by the seed company.
