A total of 180 young people have graduated from the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Programme at Buruburu community centre,Nairobi.
They graduated after successfully completing a 20 day Socio-Emotional Skills Development (S-ESD).
The graduation ceremony brought together government officials, youth officers, trainers, parents, community leaders and beneficiaries to celebrate the trainees’ achievement and prepare them for the next phase of the programme,a five month apprenticeship placement under experienced craftsmen and industry professionals.
Speaking during the event,Makadara Deputy County Commissioner Philip Koima commended the graduates for their commitment and discipline throughout the training period.
He noted that youth empowerment programmes remain critical in addressing unemployment, underemployment and social vulnerability among young people.
“The government remains committed to supporting initiatives that empower young people economically and socially. Programmes such as NYOTA are not only transforming livelihoods but also restoring hope among the youth,” said Koima.
Makadara Sub-County Youth Officer Josphine Ogonda, accompanied by officers from the Ministry Headquarters, challenged the graduates to apply the skills acquired during the training in their daily lives and future workplaces.
She emphasized the growing importance of communication, teamwork, emotional intelligence, adaptability and professionalism in today’s job market.
The NYOTA S-ESD Programme is designed to equip vulnerable, unemployed and underemployed youth with essential life and workplace skills, including personal development, leadership, conflict resolution, problem-solving, financial discipline and workplace ethics.
Through mentorship forums, coaching sessions and interactive learning activities, participants were prepared for productive engagement in society and the labour market.
Beneficiaries praised the programme for transforming their outlook on life.
Graduate Faith Njeri said the training boosted her confidence and improved her communication skills, while fellow beneficiary Brian Otieno noted that it had equipped participants with practical skills needed for professional work environments.
Following graduation, the trainees will begin a five-month apprenticeship programme aimed at providing hands-on technical experience, workplace exposure and mentorship.
Upon completion, they will undergo a Competency-Based Assessment administered by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), with successful candidates receiving nationally recognized certification.
Officials expressed optimism that the programme will continue creating pathways to employment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance while helping address youth unemployment and poverty across the country.
