As Kenya marks the second anniversary of the historic Gen Z protests today, few government officials find themselves under greater public scrutiny than Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary has emerged as one of the most influential figures in President William Ruto’s administration, placing him at the centre of national conversations on security, governance, youth activism and law enforcement.
Murkomen was born on March 12, 1979, in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
He’s a lawyer by profession and studied at the University of Nairobi where he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree before proceeding to the Kenya School of Law for a Postgraduate Diploma in Law.
He later obtained two Master of Laws degrees from the University of Pretoria and the American University Washington College of Law, making him one of the most academically accomplished members of Kenya’s Cabinet.
Murkomen is married to Gladys Wanjiru Kipchumba and they have four children.
Away from politics as it has been established by DNK-International he has often described himself as a devoted family man, lawyer and farmer.
Before entering active politics, Murkomen worked as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, lecturer and political analyst.
His rise in national politics was closely linked to President Ruto, then Deputy President, whose political movement attracted a generation of young Rift Valley leaders.
Murkomen joined the United Republican Party (URP), became one of Ruto’s most articulate defenders and was elected the first Senator for Elgeyo Marakwet County in 2013.
He would later rise to become Senate Majority Leader, cementing his position as one of Ruto’s most trusted allies.
Throughout the turbulent years that saw President Ruto break ranks with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Murkomen remained firmly in Ruto’s camp.
His loyalty during the political battles within Jubilee Party elevated his standing within the Kenya Kwanza movement.
In the 2022 General Election, he became one of the key campaign strategists and defenders of Ruto’s bottom-up economic model, helping mobilize support across the country as Kenya Kwanza secured victory.
Following the election, Ruto rewarded him with a Cabinet appointment.
Murkomen first served as Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport before briefly taking charge of the Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Ministry in 2024.
During his tenure in Sports, he championed youth empowerment programs, sports development and the creative economy agenda aimed at creating employment opportunities for young Kenyans.
His energetic engagement with athletes and sports stakeholders earned him visibility among the youth.
In December 2024, President Ruto transferred him to the powerful Interior and National Administration Ministry following the elevation of Prof. Kithure Kindiki to Deputy President.
The move placed Murkomen in charge of Kenya’s security apparatus,regional administration (previously known as provincial administration), immigration services and national government coordination.
As Interior CS, Murkomen has launched aggressive campaigns against banditry, illegal firearms, cross border crime and insecurity hotspots.
He has also emphasized modernization of security operations, digitization of government services and strengthening coordination between national and county security agencies.
His supporters credit him with maintaining a visible presence in the field and taking government services directly to wananchi through frequent public engagements.
One of his most notable approaches has been the “Jukwaa la Mwananchi” style of leadership, where he frequently tours counties, addresses public barazas and directly engages citizens on security concerns.
These tours have helped him cultivate an image of an accessible Cabinet Secretary willing to confront local challenges firsthand.
They have also enhanced his political profile nationally, with many observers viewing him as one of Kenya Kwanza’s most effective communicators.
However, the Interior docket has also presented some of the greatest challenges of his career.
Rising concerns over police conduct, insecurity incidents, political demonstrations and balancing constitutional freedoms with public order have placed him under constant public scrutiny.
Human rights organizations, opposition leaders and sections of civil society have repeatedly questioned government responses to demonstrations and police operations.
On today’s June 25, Gen Z second anniversary protests, Murkomen has maintained that the Constitution guarantees peaceful demonstrations but warned that violence, destruction of property and attacks on security installations would not be tolerated.
He insisted that security agencies would protect lawful protesters while taking action against criminal elements who exploit demonstrations to engage in looting or vandalism.
His tenure has produced several memorable remarks that have generated national debate.
Murkomen has repeatedly defended the government’s security approach while urging young people to embrace constructive engagement with public institutions.
His comments on protests, law and order, and national unity frequently dominate political discourse and media headlines, making him one of the most quoted members of Cabinet.
Today, Murkomen remains one of the most consequential figures in Kenyan politics.
With his legal background, political experience, close ties to President Ruto, and stewardship of the country’s most sensitive ministry, he occupies a position that places him at the heart of Kenya’s security, governance and political future.
As debates surrounding youth activism, national security and government accountability continue, the Interior Cabinet Secretary is likely to remain one of the country’s most watched and influential public officials.
