A police operation to arrest a murder suspect in Migori County ended in tragedy on Friday after a police officer was fatally stabbed, while the suspect was later killed by an angry mob.
According to a police report, the incident occurred at Kadera Kwoyo area in Awendo Sub-County after two officers attached to Kadera Kwoyo Police Post acted on intelligence regarding the whereabouts of a murder suspect who had been on the run.
The officers, Police Constables Josphat Ogaro Nyagesoa and Robert Kibet Koech had gone to arrest Dennis Oluoch, who was wanted in connection with the murder of Brighton Odhiambo at Ponge Village on May 4, 2025.
Police said that as the officers approached the suspect, he suddenly drew a knife and stabbed Nyagesoa in the lower abdomen.
The officer succumbed to the injuries at the scene.
Officer Koech, assisted by members of the public, pursued and arrested the suspect.
However, the suspect was wrestled away by an irate crowd and subjected to mob justice before police could secure him.
Senior police officers, including the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC), the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO), and the Sub-County Police Headquarters team from Awendo, visited and processed the scene.
The body of the slain officer was moved to Rosewood Mortuary in Rongo, while the injured suspect was rushed to Migori County Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was preserved at the same facility.
Police said the deceased officer’s next of kin had been informed, while detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Awendo have taken over investigations into the incident.
