Three suspects have been arrested after police intercepted a vehicle transporting suspected counterfeit currency with an estimated face value of Sh6 million along the Thika-Garissa Highway in Kitui County.
The arrests were made on Wednesday evening during a multi-agency security operation by officers from Kanyonyoo Police Station.
Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted a black Toyota Vitz, registration number KCY 374M, at the Yatta area after it was spotted travelling from Thika towards Kithimani.
The vehicle was being driven by Peter Waithaka Mbari and had two passengers on board, identified as John Safari Mbiti and Erick Njuguna Wambui.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a white, blue and red carrier bag containing four packages wrapped in khaki paper, aluminium foil and clear tape.
Upon opening the packages, officers found suspected counterfeit Sh1,000 notes with an estimated face value of Sh6 million.
Preliminary investigations indicate the suspects were transporting the fake currency to Wamunyu in Kitui County, where it was allegedly intended to be handed over to an accomplice identified as Sebastian Mukau.
Investigators believe the counterfeit notes were to undergo further treatment to resemble genuine currency before being circulated.
The three suspects, the motor vehicle and the recovered exhibits were escorted to Kanyonyo Police Station, where they remain in custody pending investigations by detectives from the DCI Lower Yatta in consultation with the Anti-Counterfeit Authority.
