A 24 year old man has been arrested after police intercepted a vehicle transporting suspected contraband brown sugar in Garissa County.

According to police, officers on routine patrol along Kismayu Road in the Alshamsi area at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday intercepted a white Toyota Succeed, registration number KDU 694Y, driven by Abdiaziz Abdullahi Ali, a Somali national.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 60 bags of 25 kilograms each of M-Mokis brown sugar, which officers suspect had been illegally smuggled into Kenya from Somalia.

The suspect, the vehicle and the seized sugar were escorted to Garissa Police Station, where they were detained pending further investigations and processing.
Police said a multi-agency team has taken over the matter to establish the origin of the consignment and investigate possible cross-border smuggling networks.
