When Gor Mahia lifted the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League title, much of the credit went to their calm, disciplined and experienced Ghanaian head coach, Charles Kwabla Akonnor.
Sports analysts who talked to DNK-International said that his leadership restored K’Ogalo to the top position of Kenyan football.
Akonnor was born on March 12, 1974, in Nungua, a suburb of Accra,the capital city of Ghana.
The 52 year old tactician has built a remarkable football career spanning more than three decades as both a player and coach.
Akonnor received his primary education at Nungua Primary School before joining Nungua Presbyterian Secondary and Commercial School, where his football talent flourished.
Although he did not pursue a university degree, his education was complemented by professional football development and coaching courses that prepared him for life on the touchline.
Akonnor from records show that he’s a married man and prefers keeping his family away from the public eye though his son, Charles Jesaja Herrmann, is also a professional footballer, continuing the family’s football legacy.
Kogalo’s coach football journey began in the youth ranks with Young Hearts Tema before progressing to Okwawu United and later Obuasi Goldfields in Ghana.
His impressive performances quickly attracted European scouts, earning him a move to Germany in 1992.
In Europe, Akonnor enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Fortuna Köln, where he established himself as one of the club’s most dependable midfielders before joining Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg.
At Wolfsburg, he became club captain and one of the most respected African players in Germany.
He later featured for SpVgg Unterhaching, Denmark’s AC Horsens, Cyprus’ Alki Larnaca and Germany’s SC Langenhagen before retiring.
On the international stage, Akonnor represented Ghana with distinction for a decade, earning 51 senior caps and scoring 13 goals.
He captained the Black Stars, played at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and represented Ghana at the 1996 Olympic Games.
His leadership, composure and technical ability earned him recognition among Africa’s finest midfielders during his era.
After hanging up his boots, Akonnor ventured into coaching in 2009 with Sekondi Wise Fighters.
He later coached Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC, Ashanti Gold and Asante Kotoko, where he won the 2019 Normalisation Committee Special Competition.
His impressive work earned him appointments as Ghana national team assistant coach before taking charge of the Black Stars between 2020 and 2021.
In August 2025, Gor Mahia appointed Akonnor as head coach ahead of the 2025/26 season.
He immediately instilled discipline, tactical organisation and a winning mentality, transforming the record Kenyan champions into the league’s most consistent side.
Throughout the campaign, he repeatedly expressed confidence that the club could reclaim the title while also challenging for domestic cup honours.
His efforts culminated in Gor Mahia winning the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League title, marking his first major trophy outside Ghana and adding another chapter to the club’s rich history.
His achievement also earned widespread praise in both Kenya and Ghana for restoring K’Ogalo’s dominance.
Akonnor is widely admired for his belief that coaching extends beyond tactics. One of his memorable remarks is: “Sometimes it goes beyond football, beyond tactics… you need to understand these boys very well.” He believes coaches should mentor players, build their character and prepare them for successful careers in Europe as well as life beyond football.
Looking ahead, the Ghanaian coach has expressed his ambition of helping Gor Mahia compete strongly in continental competitions while developing young Kenyan players capable of earning moves to Europe’s top leagues.
He has also maintained that winning trophies should go hand in hand with nurturing disciplined and responsible footballers.
Akonnor’s journey from the dusty football pitches of Nungua to captaining Ghana, starring in the German Bundesliga, coaching the Black Stars and guiding Gor Mahia to league glory stands as a testament to resilience, discipline and unwavering belief.
His story continues to inspire aspiring footballers across Africa, proving that commitment, patience and strong leadership can turn dreams into lasting success.
